I hate it when the Christian world gets all up in a tizzy about world events and things they think are about to happen. The latest is that an asteroid is going hit the earth around September 23rd. Oh yeah, another one that keeps coming around is that the economy will crash, which will lead to the end of the world.
I don’t think the Lord meant for us to be dwelling on such things, especially the way it has been done. The people who spread this panic seem to be trying to spread fear. And they seem to be afraid themselves.
And then there are those who are capitalizing on the fear being spread. They sell survival gear and freeze-dried food and cause people to buy things that probably won’t help them anyway if the things being said were to come to fruition.
The message being spread is not one of peace. Jesus came to bring peace to our hearts. Even when facing crucifixion Jesus’ message was love your neighbor and your enemy. On the cross, he asks his Father to forgive those responsible, “for they know not what they do.” PEACE! One of the names the scriptures used to describe Him is PRINCE OF PEACE.
What kind of a “prince of peace” would want the people of earth living in fear. Personally, I believe the focus on prophecies that I don’t think anybody understands has brought more fear than peace or love. And if the scriptures bring fear instead of love and peace, then we don’t understand.
I don’t pretend to understand how things will unfold in the future. However, my hope is that somehow, some way Christ is able to bring the people of earth together in love and harmony. And I can’t see how that is done through fear and violence. The end of the world may come, but I’m not sure we really know what that will look like.
It tears my heart out when I hear about radical Muslims killing people by cutting off their heads and other methods of death. I feel equally heartbroken when Christians judge people’s sin when we claim that God has forgiven them. Matthew 7:1 says,
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”
What I am saying is that our methods and the methods of all religions have failed desperately when it comes to causing any kind of change in the world that is good, and that is desperately needed.
It is impossible to legislate morals. Don’t get me wrong, we need laws I think, to govern our societies. However, it is impossible to write laws that will change the root causes of the “bad behaviors” of the men and women of earth. And you can’t become good by trying to obey God’s law. You can’t legislate acceptance. No matter how many laws are written, those laws can’t force people to accept the lifestyles and behaviors of those they oppose and disagree with. That kind of change has to happen at a spiritual level in all people; not just the ones you think need changing.
Acceptance has to be based in love. Yea.. I don’t know how to express what I feel. But I know that being critical of others is not the way. It doesn’t work..from either side.
As for the end of the world, as I said, I don’t know quite what that will look like, but I sure hope its better than WHAT’S BEING SPREAD ALL OVER THE INTERNET!
