Why honor your father and mother?
Well, the bible says, in the 10 commandments no less, that in doing so will increase your days on the earth. Let’s have a look at what it says:
Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee (Exodus 20:12).
That’s the first reason we should honor our father and mothers – God commands us to. But there are some good reasons for this. The scripture says, “that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God gives.” To honor your father and mother means to listen to them. Esteem their opinions and guidance. Give them respect, and, respect the things they are trying to teach you about life.
It is your parents who take care of you when you are little. It is your parents who teach you when you start to grow up and begin learning. It is your parent who guide through your teen years (if you will listen to them). It is what you parents taught through those years that will get you through when you become a young adult. It is your parents teaching that will enable you to teach your children.
Do you know what the commandments are that follow honor thy father and mother?
- Thou shalt not kill.
- Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- Thou shalt not steal.
- Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
- Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
I believe they are listed after Honoring father and mother for a reason. Killing, cheating, stealing, lying, and wanting your neighbor’s stuff is a result of having not learned the true lessons of life from your parents – your first teachers. You can’t learn anything from anyone you refuse to respect and honor. You need to honor and respect your parents and learn from them or you could end up breaking these remaining laws of God. I believe that if you don’t honor your father and mother you are on a slippery slope that leads to a dark life.
This begins with honoring God first. The 10 commandments begin like this:
I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20: 2,3)
God demands honor and respect as the God who has rescued from bondage. It is God who takes care of us in this life. He is the Eternal Father who expressed His Love for us ultimately through the sacrifice of His Son Yeshua Messiah.
Have your parents sacrificed for you? Have they clothed you? Fed you? Put a roof over your head?
